create a home Network Laptop Linux and an Windows PC
 

Hello everyone

i am very satisfied with this new LINUX world.

But i have one small problem that this comunity certainly can give me a solution.

i need to create a home network in order to use printers and disk space between my laptop and my daughter PC.

This network will work between my laptop with Linux (fedora Core 3) and my daughter Windows XP Pc.

I have a router with firewall where both Pc are connected to the internet and i have a cable modem connected to that router (DHCP conection). There is also a gateway Ip to the Internet

Is it possible to make such a network?

if so, how can i make it?

maybe those are few parameters for anyone can help me. if someone needs extra details to help me, please just let me know.

ok, first of all- how much do you know about networking (ie, "it's my job", "set up many networks before", "have done windows networking", "at least one network" or "never done it before")?

is this network actually set up?

ummm.... when the laptop and the desktop are plugged into the router, can you ping the other computer from each other? Do the computers have IP addresses? (192.168.etc.etc)

oooh- check out this link http://www.pcguidebook.com/homenetwork.asp it has a nice picture- you don't need wireless to connect to your laptop. it is just a nice option.

I have allready worked on networks...it's not my job but i am mounting (voice and data) on an hospital right now. Windows SBS and SQL server.

However , i am a newbie on LINUX, but i am liking this freedom that is allowed.

so, i am expecting to create all the stuff i can get.


the router has a static IP 192.168.0.1 . is a DLINK DL-604

i can ping the router , but although i have a workgroup named HOME i can't get my daughter PC.

we both go the Internet through the Router where is connected a Cable Modem.

My first glincy was to put both Pc on the same workgroup, so they can see oneanother. but it didn't work out.

the second thought, was: route both machines by the router i could see one another...

maybe if i can get Static IP for both machines and route them by the DLINk i could see both and then work on them. didn't work out.

so, i am calling for help.


P.S. if you want we could chat in Spanish. no tienes problemas......

Hmm... perhaps we should stick with english so future users can find the answer in this thread. :)

ok, try setting up static IP's for the computers- 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 . Are the computers actually physically connected when they are going through the router? if not, then you may need to buy a hub.

Do you know howto configure the linux box? (networking wise)

well, i put 192.168.0.3 on laptop LINUX and 192.168.0.4 on Windows PC

on Consola tried to ping 192.168.0.4 and the answer was "Timed out".

it didn't arrived to the other machine....

so.

i went to my computer and on section Network clicked twice and it opens a screen but nothing on it...neither a shared folder....


well. i think i have to do a lot of work here.

my router is an ethernet router broadband, so it has allready the switch part you are mentioning (hub)

both computers are conected there.....

i went to the red hat config network and put all the details i think i need....

any more clews???

oh yeah- do you have your subnet mask set up? (255.255.255.0)

umm... are you absolutly certain that the computers are physically connected?

your gateway should be the IP of the router, I think. (192.168.0.1)

As mater fact on Windows PC side i put it everything

on my side didn't appear anything to put the sub-net mask.

gateway.... the same thing on my side but not on the PC.

What i think about all this is:

Both computer should be going to the internet not by DHCp but by a IP static and trough the gateway on the router (firewall).

they should have IP static defining both machines ( 192.168.0.3 and 4, by example)

they should see one another they are on the same Network

Although they could have diferent workgroup , they should see one another.

is it the DHCP issue , due to the cable modem????
i think this could be one part of the problem....

I can't remember the exact reason right now, but you should set up the subnet mask... do that first, see if it works, then set the gateway.

hey, to make sure everything is configured on the software level, can you get your hands on a crossover cable?

Titanium, i think with this schema you will understand the all scene:

LAPTOP (LINUX and XP) PC (XP)
ROUTER
INTERNET
FIREWALL

LAPTOP has a Printer (HP7660) to be shared by PC and the PC has a Printer (EPSON C62) also to be shared as well the disc .

When we go to the Internet we go by the router whose IP is 192.168.0.1 and by DHCP
I have a cable Modem that is conected to the router so we can enter in Internet

What i really want is :

1 - Put those computers(LAPTOP and PC) in the same network (Linux or the XP on the LAPTOP can see the Windows XP PC and vice-versa)

2 - Share the 2 printers and the disc of the PC

3 - Keep the Router with the firewall as it is . Every package is routed by it. by the way is a D-LINK DI-604. Now i am accessing the internet and the mail by DHCP.

4 - Both computers are conected now to the router.


So..

I just want to see the other computer and use the printer or store data on its disc on this 1st step. Maybe i will try another tasks in the near future after everything is going Ok.

i read an article of someone that is puting both computers in the same network using a crossover cable.
Thais is not my idea...

my thought was for you to test your network at the simplest level- to make sure that that is working. (using a crossover cable, but that is not for the final network, just for testing)
we need to narrow down where the problem is before we can fix it.

can the XP's talk to each other?

i had allready the XP's talking and sharing one another.....

Now i tried to do the same thing but...no way....

so, i thought it might be for the Linux...but i allready discover that it has nothing to do with Linux....

so..i am going to try with crossover cable as you told me so.

any IP on both machines or just name them to see if they can comunicate???

The easiest way to network linux and windows PCs is to use Samba. This allows you to 'browse' your network via 'Network Neighbourhood' and share printers/files easily. There is plenty of good documentation available from the Samba website www.samba.org.

I am a new guy on Linux. So , how can i do it?.

My laptop work in my office where there is a network with a Server (Windows Nt) and at home where i have a DHCP-router (DLINK DI-604) . the network will be done between my daughter's PC (Windows XP) and my laptop. we both share the internet connection that arrives to the router trough a cable modem.

i want to print tasks on her printer and share its disc and she can share my printer (my 40 Gb disc is partionated with Fedora Core 3 and Windows XP, so i don't have so much space as i want it to.

i am trying several ways like i used to do on WIndows, but for some reason i can't get the network but i can go to the Internet. Both computers are connected to the router.

ok, so the xp's can talk- so, the problem is your configuration, most likely on the linux side. what does the command ifconfig give you?

well, yes, samba is the next step, but if you can't ping (a basic network test) then you can't samba.
