Crazy runaway menus - Gnome

Hi
Can anyone explain why every so often when I open any of my menus the cursor appears to scroll rapidly through the menu items, almost as though the up/down arrow key is being pressed??

I've never come across it on a linux OS but I know that I've seen it in the office on XP. Most say it is due to an optical mouse (maybe recalibrating?) ... are you using an optical mouse by chance?
