I have no idea, but can you find clues in
dmesg
tail -n800 /var/log/syslog

lsof pidnumber of offensive process

You will need to be root

were you root?
Sometimes it is distro dependent
What do you get from
ls -l /var/log/

please fill in your distro in your profile. IS this suse?

Any clues in
dmesg

maillog

You have lots of maillog.x so logrotate must be working

I am not sure I can help futher
What does the top function give you?
Any other "dogy" processes?

Did you run lsof as I indicated

Is your pop / imap working properly? I mean do you download emails correctly
Is this a server or desktop

I think you will need to post more info to get further help

I am no guru, and know very little about mail
How come you have popuser having twice the "same process"?
Is this because it is a imap protocol
(shot in the dark)

can you locate spamd (this is a daemon) and see what it does

the number of running processes is equal to the number of users that are using the mail, yes it is a imap protocol

i think it will be more easier to reinstall courier from scratch. i hope those who are using the mail server will forgive me for that. Thank you very much for your time.

I am out of my depth here
