Could use some help getting started with X Server basics: almost there, but...

I'm completely overwhelmed by TFM which, yes, I have R. I still can't understand how to get even the basics of authorization working. I get a connection refused and have no idea where to go from here.

Any help or thoughts on this are appreciated.
