UPDATE

i hit cntrl alt F1 to get into console and log in that user, ls -a confirms the file doesn't exist. so i switched to root and copied the .ICEauthority in root's home directory over to the new user's home dir. i then changed ownership of that file to the user, and i still can't log in.

does anyone have a workaround for this issue??

Related problem, ICE authority

Running on Dell Precision M4700, Linus Mint installed on separate partition from Win10. Installed Linux from flashdrive and for 3 months it worked well. Then up comes this error: could not update ICEauthority file /home/greg/.ICEauthority. A number of suggestions ask me to use an ID and password. During installation and since I did not create either so I have nothing to enter, so around and around I've gone. I 'think' (only think because I'm such a newb I can't be sure I'm reading this accurately, that the ICEauthority file exists. Keeping in mind, again, the newbie status at my end so please be careful to keep the steps easy to follow and not super techy, how do I proceed. Simply installing a new Linux distro and losing the existing one is NOT an option. Many thanks!
