Hey i'm a novice in linux and ive been trying to install several linux version on a usb-stick. And im always ending up with this following problem.

Latest ive installed after this tutorial:
USB Xubuntu 8.10 Persistent Install - installed from windows(sorry im not allowed to post url)

and i get this error:
[SYSLINUX 3.63]
Could not find kernel image: linux
boot:

Try enabling 'USB legacy support' in the system BIOS.

now ive just entered my bios and i dont have that option or anything similar. But my pc supports usb boot because ive tried another usb that it can boot on.
In the booting order the usb is 1st priority.

the problem is the same as here, but none of the solutions helps me..

ok some more info.. ive opened my syslinux.cfg with a text editor and heres how it looks like, got no idea weather this is right:

include menu.cfg
default vesamenu.c32
prompt 0
timeout 300
gfxboot bootlogo

You didn't by any chance make your flash drive bootable with UNetbootin (for windows), did you? I was having the same problem with it. It seems to write a blank vesamenu.c32. It only did it when I tried to make a bootable flash drive from ISOs I'd already downloaded. (I got it to work when finally I tried using the Puppylinux that it downloaded for me.)

I ran into this same issue trying to boot from a USB running SLAX loaded using Universal USB Installer from pendrivelinuxDOTcom (sorry not allowed to post URLs). Though I am a Linux newbie I was able to work around it as detailed below. As this is the number 1 result in google for this error I thought I would post what I did to resolve as I have not seen anything quite as simple in the threads I have read through...hopefully it will help with other installations as well...not sure.

After poking around in the syslinux.cfg and the slax.cfg I figured out that the system was expecting the file vesamenu.c32 to be in the /boot dir on the USB and that it was not there. Incidentally I also noticed it was expecting to find that initrd.gz as well and it was not there either. I'm not sure why neither were put there during the installation but perhaps something went wrong. Simply copying both of these files to the /boot dir on the USB resolved the problem. For SLAX I had previously downloaded the .tar version and so I simply retrieved the files from the archive and placed them where they needed to be on the USB drive. Alternatively, one should be able to mount the .iso and retrieve the specific files that way if necessary.
