core 4 yum update problems
I just installed Fedora Core 4 from a DVD
Now I am trying to run "yum update" for this. I keep getting a number of "bad mirror" type error msgs when it tries to "download" the gcc packages. I have been getting these errors for several days now. Would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix this. Thanks |
Hi and welcome to LQ.
Fedora Core 4 reached its end of life a while ago so updates and support have not been available for some time now. This is probably why you are having problems with the yum mirrors. I suggest you take a look at Fedora 8. |
Thats because FC4 is old and more than likely not supported anymore. Fedora is at version 8 and no longer called Fedora Core, just Fedora 8. Try downloading the newest version and you shouldn't have any problem with the updates.

thanks everyone
I sort have guessed that Fedora 4 was "retired", but was not sure. Your reply has now confirmed it for me. Thanks everyone. Onward and fowared to Fedora 8, and I HOPE that it will not give me the problems that I read about in other threads in this forum. I am a "mixed newbie", meaning that I have done a lot of linux but am not a real "guru" yet. I am able to do a total install from a distibution DVD and even can do a number of admin tasks to setup my linux. My target system is mainly to compile and run text-based C++ programs that do serial I/O to data devices and to send data via ethernet sockets to other linux systems. Again, thank you everyone for you kind comments and suggestions.
