Copying Shortcut Icons to Desktop and making them smaller in size

I am trying to copy icons (shortcuts) to my desktop. I know if I right click, there is a program that allows me to browse and set them up. Problem - I do not know the names of the programs so I can't use "find" files. Is there a way to cut and paste shortcuts to desktop?

Also, in Linux, I find that the icons are to large on desktop and I can't figure out how to size them down. Can this be done?

It depends on your Desktop Environment. Are you using GNOME or KDE or something else entirely? If you're using GNOME then you should be able to drag icons from Nautilus or the apps menu to the desktop. With GNOME 2.4 you should be able to resize the icons by selecting 'stretch' from the icon's context menu.

No. I am using KDE. Though I should try GNOME on one of my destros. I have RedHat, Mandrake and SuSE install on three different partitions.

I just want to awaken this question from the dead. Maybe, I'll get a couple more hits.

in kde, you can drag program icons from your kmenu onto the desktop. when a context menu pops up, choose "link here". to change the size of the icons, go into your KDE Control Center and expand the Appearance & Themes tab. select the Icons entry and in one of those tabs will be a dropdown combo list where you can change the size of the icons used. i do believe this changes all the icons though for everything and not just for the icons on the desktop.

oh yeah, if you can't find the icon to click to get KDE Control Center (there's also a program called Control Panel so it can be a bit confusing), open up a shell terminal and type the command:

kcontrol

and that will open up KDE Control Center.
