Copying files to desktop w/out being root

Can anyone tell me how to copy a file from /usr/bin to my desktop. It tells me I don't have the permissions to do so. The file is an xmms file. I can copy it to desktop in root, but not in my normal user. I tried it in a shell and I still can't figure out which folder i would copy it too to get it onto my desktop...

Thanks a lot for any input...

well if you use gnome it would be something like
cp /usr/bin/xmmsfile /home/user/.gnome-desktop
log in terminal as root of course.
not sure if you use kde, i dont' use that...but i am sure there is something similiar that could be done if you looked around

Why would you want a file on your desktop???

Why not just create a Link to it???

Thanks DrOzz, but i do use KDE...lol. How would i create a link to it Jasep? or anyone if you know how...thanks again

yah i was going to ask the same question, but i resisited and just answered...so since its out in the open now, i am also awful curious why you want an xmms file on your desktop ;-0

right click the desktop and go to new launcher ( i think thats what it says in kde) and select the type of link it will be and navigate to the file?
something like that anyways...again i dont use kde so that might be sketchy.

Yeah thanks guys it worked. If you guys insist on not having a icon for xmms on ur desktop what would you guys use? Links? Isn't that almost the equalivent of an xmms icon...lol. Just wondering what you guys use to access your installed programs. Thanks again guys for the help, it's much appreciated.

You don't have to copy the whole executable to the desktop to have it there. You right click and drag it to and select "create link here"...

I use KDE and to create icons on the desktop, I simply right click and select >>create new>link to application and then point the newly created link to the file I want to launch in the executables region and give it a decent icon, maybe rename it,... and Wa-La,... desktop icon.

If you use Gnome, it's a little harder.

I thin you have to use the file manager to create a link in your /home/xxxx directory, then dump it to the desktop region once you have made it work the way you want it to. I don't use Gnome (I prefer KDE) so, I can't give you operational explanations.
