Copy problem
 

Hello,

I am just trying to copy the files from a crashed windows system.

I'm using a kanotix live cd. I opened to windows in konqueror one on the win hd one on a samba drive on my network.

I simple pull the maps from one window to the other.

Since I followed some of the copy progress, I had a feeling something didn't work out.

When I checked out some directories it seems that files ending with an underscore did not copy. Selecting them in the directory and copy them didn't work either.

The files are almost all files like "file.ex_" or something like that, the common thing is the underscore in the last position. I thought that the underscore was no problem for linux, or did I miss something?

Does anybody know the answer?

Its been a while but as I recall replacing last character with an underscore "_" is how Windows/DOS "deletes" a file. If nothing else has been written to any of the blocks the file was using its possible to "undelete" in Windows/DOS (last time I did this was with Norton Utilities - I "think" Windows has a built in utility nowadays).

You're correct that UNIX/Linux doesn't care about underscore in a file name but since the filesystem is likely a FAT32 or NTFS filesystem the rules for the filesystem itself (defined by MS) may be your issue. Linux filesystems generally aren't built for undeletion - unlike MS UNIX/Linux assumes you mean delete when you say delete. Doing a google search for "FAT32", "deleted", "files" & "Linux" gave me a few hits. Since I haven't tried any of the methods I saw I'll let you do the search and explore those after you've determined the filesystem type.
