Convert vfat partition to ext3?

How can i convert a vfat partition to ext3 (or ext2) without reformatting and losing the contents?
I have a hard drive that ive moved from a windows box to my linux server and i want to set it up as a NFS share but it wont work as a vfat partition.

Any ideas?

formatting will destroy all data on the partition...........
back it up to cd-r and format then put data back on disk
the only way it will work........or move data to another partition
...format then move it back...........
