convert flv file to be played in XP

I downloaded couple of youtube video files that has extension .flv to be used for my presentation. However, the computer that I will be using during the presentation may be windows XP and may not have the codec for it.

Is there a file format that will be univerally supported in either linux or windows machine?

I thought mpeg1 does (is .mpg = mpeg1 )? I use the ffmpeg to convert it as

Code:
$ffmpeg -i youtubefile.flv output.mpg
I got some strange unsynchronize of sound and movie when I play it using the media player in Windows. Is ther other option or different format I should use?
