I agree. Freespire might be an ok distribution, but I don't think thats where you should start.
Here on LQ (welcome by the way), in the Main menu, the box to the top-right, there is a link "download linux". Click there and start with the "15 most popular". E.g. go from the top and burn the DVD and give it a try. If you find one you like and it recognise your hardware, you can install it on your machine.
The widely used distributions will make it easier to get help. So start with the most popular ones.
