Console-keybd shortcuts not working_deb squeeze

Ctl button's erratic behaviour

I am using Squeeze, recently the Ctl+Alt+F1-F9 buttons stopped responding in the GUI, gdm. Later I noticed the Ctl+l, Ctl+a buttons do not work in the console! Same difficulty noticed in Vim(Ctl+R); however Ctl+Alt+F1 etc works in console mode!
Managed to get the Ctl button reassigned to the 'Caps' lock in gdm using the Preferences menu; however still no luck in the console:
Following console shortcuts don't work
(a) Ctl+a
(b) Ctl+b
(c) Ctl+l
(d) Ctl+c
(e) Ctl+z
However Ctl+Alt+F1-F9 do work.
Reconfigured keyboard but still no luck(sudo dpkg-reconfigure ke....).
Any ideas!!!
bind -p indicates above shortcuts.
Thanks
podianu

PS. And I thought only I behaved erratically

Main menu -> Settings -> System settings -> Keyboard and mouse -> Standard keyboard shortcuts.

Scroll through the list of standard shortcuts to find the action you want to define.

Right click the action: a dialog box will appear listing Default and Custom shortcut keys. Select the Custom radio button. Click the button labeled None (to input your desired shortcut keys).

Hi bigrigdriver,
Your reply pertains to keyboard shortcut in the GUI, my query pertains to the 'Ctl' button not working in the GUI and console; offers only partial functionality. Tried various options to no avail, presently re-set the Caps lock to Ctl in the GUI. Does not work in the console mode.
Regards
