Connection to network interferes with xauthority?

hi,
Every time I connect to the network (eth0, using dhcp), I lose
permission to open displays:

$xdvi &
[1] 2996
$Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
Error: Can't open display: :0.0

[1]+ Exit 1 xdvi &

Without the network, everything in X works fine. I run redhat-9. I've tried several
window-managers, all show this behaviour. Does anyone know what's
wrong?
