Connecting to the Internet with Debian 3.1 using dialup and one more question...
 

I finally managed to install Debian on my PC :) Could somebody please explain me how to connect to the Internet using dialup? I have a external modem zoom modem that was detected by Xandros Linux OCE 3.0 without troubles... Is it possible to avoid configuring the internet connection during the install?

Also, my computer screen [Compaq FS740... I still have the manual...] supports multiple VGA standards: 640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768 [The one it normally uses...] and 1280 x 1024 [I am afraid of using this one because my monitor is old...] However, the resolution of the GNOME desktop is just terrible.

From what I have read (Linux Pro Magazine, Sept 2005 Issue 58) that's common and I quote:

"[T]he X server gave us an 800x600 screen resolution, although our 17 inch LCD monitor and ATI Rage 128 graphics adapter can handle 1280x1024 pixels without breaking a sweat. Giving the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 command and relaunching the X server, by pressing [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Backspace], took care of the problem in our case."

I tried the above as su and it didn't work... How can I fix the resolution of my screen? Is there anything that I am missing?

Has anybody managed to work around a ESS Allegro PCI sound card and make the CD player work? How? Believe me, I have read and tried a bunch of things...

to get to internet using dial-up....look around for "kppp" ( somewhere in "internet" options )
make the appropriate settings in "kppp" and you will on net.

There is a Gnome equivalent to kppp. I have never used Gnome so I couldn't tell you how well it works. I believe it is a gui for wvdial. As for the sound card try lspci -vv from the command line and see if your sound card is listed. If it is try sndconfig as root and see if that will get it working. Then double check your mixer settings in the Control Panel and make sure they aren't muted. Mine were on Fedora and that gave me fits for a while. It is great to run a system with music playing in the background and work happily along. Good luck.
