Connecting to Linux (Fedora) database?


in a windows workgroup network, i just installed Fedora 5 Server with MySQL but window client just cannot connect to it to access the MYSQL database. how do i creat the connectivity for windows users? these are xp and windows 2000 pcs

Hi.
I don't know Fedora at all but, mysql is usually configured to listen to 127.0.0.1 (localhost) so you can't connect to it from another computer. Edit /etc/mysql/my.cnf and change bind-address = 127.0.0.1 to your computers LAN ip like 192.168.2.123 .

thanks Errotan, but the thing is that when i open the /etc/mysql/my.cnf file i dont see any entry line (with the 127.0.0.1) for the ip address configuration. shall i just add it myself?

You shouldn't need to modify your my.cnf. You need to run system-config-securitylevel and under "Other ports" you need to add 3306 for both UDP and TCP. Once you are able to get to the mysql server, you may still not be able to connect until you add the User/Host to the mysql database user table.
