connecting to a remote microsoft home network from linux?
I want to access my friends home network. He has a dedicated dsl service as do I. I, of course, am running Linux (Fedora Core 1). How would I access his system? What tools would I use to connect to his network? He has 3 computers running various Windows os'es. 1 XP and 2 '98se. I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. I am a newbie to most standards. but i am familiar with some linux commands in terminal. (I have used Mandrake before.) I am running Fedora/Gnome. Thanx for any advice you can offer!

You could try one of the three below. I am not sure, but you might already have openssh and vnc on your system.

Do you speak of connecting through samba or what? Will you clarify what you mean by "connect to his network"?

If you want to access remote desktop on the M$ desktop you should use ssh.
I use putty and tunnel the Remote desktop through that... nice and fast and you can compress the data. If you require further help in config of putty etc let me know..... With XP you need no other software, but with Win98 you may require VNC or other. As a side not you can use putty to connect from Win to Linux desktop.... this is cool...... Thanx guys. Now I just need to find documentation on setting up vnc. Vnc sounds about what I'm searching for. It is also on my system version 4.0 from rhn.My buddy is now going to change over to a Fedors core cause he is tired of win xp screwing up! Thanx to my influence we will grow a little larger.

VNC Setup....
VNC is easy to setup... or it was on RH8.
You will be using RH to connect to a Win Box, correct ?? I will have to mess around with the command line to get it all straight before I post... If you want to use Win to connect to linux box, you should get putty for windows and rdesktop (Easy to instal on linux !!) for linux. Google for them !! Oh yeah and vnc for win also... then pipe the VNC down putty.... makes it more secure. Gareth |
