Connecting Linux Mint 15 MATE to wireless router
With a lot of help from the Linux Mint forum I have created a bootable USB and can get to the internet via an ethernet cable. However Mint won't locate and show the wireless router. Chromebook, the smartphones, and the VISTA laptop all recognized the wireless router and, once I put in the password, all was well.
Mint, however, does not even know the router is there. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you solve it? I am a complete newbie to Linux. |
Hi and welcome to Linux questions. Can you tell us what sort of PC/Laptop you are using to boot your USB stick on. Mint 15 can handle WiFi but we need to know the hardware you're running it on. Are you expecting it to connect automatically or have you had it "look" for the router?
I think Mint 15 is what I put on my wife's old Dell inspiron and it works and connects fine. Unfortunately I can't check how it's set up just now. Play Bonny! :hattip: |

The 'Linux Mint Beginners Guide' seems to assume that everything will just work. I can find no information for dealing with a cranky router. I appreciate your help. What other information might you need? |

I've managed to have a quick look at my Wife's set-up and, I'm sorry to say, You're quite right! It's not quite as easy to find the wireless network set up manager as I thought. :( However, you may have a small network icon in the bottom right of the panel which could indicate what's going on with the connection or try diging down through the menu system - I'd have expected to find the answer under Administration or Preferences but see below. Hmm...System Tools seems logical, maybe I'm not as sharp as I thought, Doh! Menu --> System Tools --> System Settings --> Network --> Wireless. My wife's Inspiron 6000 shows the connection to my router. Note there are a couple of "switches" to enable the connection or "Aircraft Mode" which need to be correctly configured. The panel icon mentioned before appears to show all the neighbour's routers so the scan and connection selection is probably configured from here. Have a look and let us know how you get on. You shouldn't have to muck about with the Router, if you have changed stuff on it, check other devices can still connect. Play Bonny! :hattip: |

There was also "Point to point connection not configured" When I checked the Properties for this there was a screen that said ppp0 connection and several places for data like Phone Number. Is this for connecting via dialup modem? Our modem is a DSL and is on all the time. The icon in the bottom right of the main screen only shows the Ethernet connection and the opportunity to create a VPN whatever that is. When I tried to create a VPN using the data from the router, nothing happened. What is the next step? |

Well, it looks like the WiFi card in the Inspiron 1720 isn't being recognised by Mint :( However, I've found this thread in an Ubuntu forum which may help you. (Mint is based on Ubuntu so is fairly similar under the hood) http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-776626.html It looks like the WiFi card in this particular Inspiron needs a wee bit of help to get it to work. I didn't even get a yes/no prompt after Command #3. I did get problems with Vista, though, so I had to let Vista fix itself. System-->Administration-->Network still shows only the ethernet connection. Is this laptop hopeless? |
