Confusion with iX86
halo..i am new to linux and i dun understand the difference between i386,i486,i586 and i686 ?
Can anyone give explanation about this ? |
It's all about processors. Something marked i386 will probably run on any Intel-compatible processor not older than 15 years or something. i486 also, but maybe you should say 12 years. If you don't know what 80386 means, I can only say it's some old processor series. i586 is for pentium-compatible and higher. i686 means something like pentium 3+, pentium m, AMD K7 (or K8?) and higher, any modern processor.

now i am using fedora core 4 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 i386 ....can i install kernel devel package of i686 ? because i cannot find any package of 1386.
