confusion installing guest OS in vmware

hi.. just having a confusion.. I was about to install my guest OS in vmware..now im in the setup part wherein you should partition your VM disk in able to install the guest OS.. now, i wonder WHY the hardisk TO BE PARTITION is read as /dev/hda AND it is also mentioned in this site :

http://slackworld.berlios.de/2007/vmware.html

Quote:

Click on "Start this virtual machine". If all goes to plan, you will be presented with the ISOLINUX start screen. Follow the usual procedure to install slack-current, run fdisk /dev/hda and create swap and / partitions, then run setup as usual.

i am just wondering.. since i have my winXXX OS (in another HD) and it is read as /dev/hda ALSO. . .

hope i could be enlightened here. ..

VMware is a virtual machine, and therefore you also have an virtual /dev/hda again....

With standard installation of VMware and installation of guest OS's you cannot hurt or damage your real setup.

ok .. yup i have setup the partitions already.. BUT i have encountered a major problem.. WHILE installing my guest OS (VL) in the midst of the installation, this message appeared :

Operation on file '/var/lib/vmware/VirtualMachines/VL5.8/VL5.8.vmdk" failed (no space left on device) the file system where disk /var/lib/vmware/VirtualMachines/VL5.8/VL5.8.vmdk" resides is FULL. Choose retry to attempt the operation again.. Choose abort to terminate the session.

just wondering. .. how come it would be full if its just a VM?

the details of my VL setup in VM is

Memory 256mb
Harddisk IDE 0:0 (80.0G)
CDROM IDE 1:0 /dev/cdrom
Mouse : ps/2
floppy : /dev/fd0
ethernet : Bridged
Processors : 1

the content of my /var/lib/vmware/VirtualMachines/VL5.8$

me@darkstar:/var/lib/vmware/VirtualMachines/VL5.8$ ls
VL5.8.vmdk VL5.8.vmsd VL5.8.vmx* nvram vmware.log
