Question Confusing sound problems

I have a dual boot XP and Fedora Core 3 setup. All sounds work in XP. In Fedora, only the sound detection sound works in Gnome. KDE, however, makes the normal sounds. In both KDE and Gnome, when I try to play a CD, everything proceeds normally, but there is no sound. Trying to run music player tells me It can't set up the scheduler and asks if I ran gst-register. I do not seem to have an app by this name. Also, this problem has persisted with the current core and its predecessor.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Eubillie
