Confused on Configuring Nagios

Hello all,

I've installed Nagios 3 on Ubuntu 8 and currently am monitoring a few servers as well as receiving notifications on CPU, Memory, ping ect... status.

But I am using the default settings of the pre-existing configuration file. I'm looking to define the settings for various services, for all and individual servers. What file do I need to edit? Just the .cfg file of that particular server?

I want to edit a group of servers with the same monitoring specs and I would also like to edit individual.

I've searched on Google, but I don't seem to find a straight forward guide, most of the literature is theory and describing the config files.

Does anybody have a good resource they know of that will guide me? I mean on the Nagios website they only discuss what the functions are ect... not how to set them up and configure.

Any guidance would be much apreciated.

Cheers,

ZiPPy

that is possible, you need to define a group first and configure the individual servers to be in that group.

check out this site: http://homepage.mac.com/duling/halfd...-Howto-p1.html

look into "hostgroups", i hope that helps.

I would like to create a PING service.

From what I understand I define the service.

It will be placed in /usr/local/nagios/etc/company/services.cfg

define service{
host_name server1
service_description PING
check_command check_ping!100.0,20%!500.0,60%
max_check_attempts 3
normal_check_interval 5
retry_check_interval 1
check_period 24x7
notification_interval 120
notification_period 24x7
notification_options w,u,c,r,f
contact_groups localadmins
}

I created the service.cfg file and placed it in my company directory along with the other servers. But I receive an error after I run the verification on the config file. It states:

ERROR: Template 'PING' specified in service definition could not be found (config file '/usr/local/nagios/etc/company/xptest.cfg', starting on line 124)

The xptest.cfg is my test box on the network, and line 124 is where I added the following:

define service{
use PING
host_name xptest
service_description ping
check_command check_ping!100.0,20%!500.0,60%
}

So I am pretty sure my config files are just mixed up. Where do I need to create the service.cfg in order for my servers to locate it when I define that particular service?

Cheers,

ZiPPy

Do I even need to create the PING config? Isn't there already a pre-made PING config file I could just use?

you're trying to use the "PING" template which isn't defined anywhere in your config files, well at least properly.

i took the liberty of googling for you, read on:
http://www.fdcservers.net/vbulletin/...ead.php?t=1514

i haven't worked with nagios for quite a long time now but skimming through the link above gave me an insight on what you should be doing. sorry i couldnt give u a more specific reply, reading through the info on the link above would give you the answer you need.

cheers.
