Unhappy Confused Newbie - No mouse (sort of!)

Hi everybody

I am completly new to linux although i have had a play a few years ago. I have a small problem that i hope you will be able to help me with. I have looked through the help files and other posts and really got myself confused!

I have installed mandrake 9 it all went lovely, when it re booted and KDE loaded I found that the mouse curser was "stuck" at the top corner of the screen. I could use the mouse but I have no curser to tell me where it is! i can click etc but I have to guess where it is!

I tried to configer the mouse but it has had no affect,

any help would be truly appretiated!
I really don't want to go back to you know what!

I had a similar problem with a genius netmouse with the cursor flying to the top right & staying there - dropped back the definition to a 3button ps2 & was ok after that.

Is it a bog-std mouse or a fancy one ?

add the line >option sw_cursor< to your /etc/X11/XF86config file look for the section similar to the following.

Section "Device"
BoardName "AutoDetected"
Driver "trident"
Identifier "Device[0]"
Option "sw_cursor"
VendorName "AutoDetected"
EndSection

save the file, log out and restart the xserver.

Hi again, I have managed to "get inside" the only thing close to Rshaws answer is:

Section "pointer"
Protocol "PS/2"
Device " /dev/psaux"
Emulate3buttons
Emulate3timeout 50

End section

Am I in the right area?

I know I must be a pain! but I am determined to get this up and running!

it needs to go in the section defining the graphics card, yours will look different than the generic example that i gave.
