Red face CoNfUseD, BEWILDERED, flustered

hi.. while installing an application, the installer failed to start because java vm was not in my PATH variable. when i type echo $PATH in the terminal a bunch of folders that are availiable come up but none with any of my java files. anyways... suse doesnt let me edit the /ect/.profile because of some thing like it will dissapear after updates and says to make a file called /ect/profile.local for my settings and variables. i have tried the export command to add a path but it didnt work either. how do i go about adding a PATH variable and or creating my own bash profile? and next question is... do PATH variables recognize all the subfolders and thier files too? meaning that if i point the path variable to my java folder, will it also access the java/bin, java/lib, ect u know what im sayin? the whole path variable thing has stumped me a few times so i figured i'd consult the experts

oh yes i just remembered... when i do add the path i need with the export function, i cant do any other commands like sh filename.bin, or chhmod, or other common commands... it just says command not found and the only path in the echo $PATH is the one i just added.
