Confused!
 

I just installed VMWARE Server with the latest release of Ubuntu. I'm trying to install vmware tools. It gives me some instructions on how to do it but I'm not following.

I'm sure this is a major newbie ? but please help.

Perhaps you could tell us exactly what you don't understand??? This is a bit like saying "my car won't start"

This is what happened with VMware tools.
 

Ahhh. Yeah.

OK so I got the ISO on the desktop. Unzipped to a folder on the desktop. There are some instructions saying to go to command prompt with super user privs. and then run vmware-install.pl.

I right clicked on it and opened it with a root terminal and typed that in but no go. That was about where I stopped & came here.

I am wondering if you are using VMware Player and VMware Server interchangeably, which is incorrect. You seemed to do that in a previous post. The VMWare tools are yet another add-on package.

Installing VMWare player is pretty easy - you can install it from the Synaptic Package Mgr if you are set up to to use all repositories. Just check the box and go. You can set up a virtual machine def easily from easyvmx.com. You are typically up and running very quickly.

If you are using VMWare Server, that is pretty advanced and you should know why you need to use that package in preference to the VMWare Player which is included in the Ubuntu 3rd party repositories. At least that was the advice from our last LUG meeting where we discussed virtual machines.

What do you want to do with your virtual machines? There isn't much point in solving a tough problem to find out that you are using the wrong app for the job. The presenter at or LUG meeting for VMWare Server believed that it was best for folks like him, a pro engineer who serviced a variety of commercial servers, and that VMWare Player was best for what the average desktop user wants. That has been my experience too. As a relative newbie, I was the presenter for VMPlayer.

The Player does not come with the VMWare tools, but you might not need them.

Well I'm trying to run Ubuntu with Windows so as to get used to it & switch over...

VMware server was free. VMplayer, as I understand it from some posts isn't as clean.

VMware server says that I don't have vmnware tools installed and that it'll run better if they are.

I tried opening it with synaptics package manager but that didn't work.

Im assuming you have installed vmware server on Ubantu and want to run a WIN guest. I've just done this on Opensuse10.2. (VMware V1.0.2 build-39867)

Run vmware, connect to localhost and in the VMware Console window menu select VM,Install VM ware tools. Thats it.

However before you do this you will have to "install" your windows guest. VMware tools will then appear as a control panel icon.

BTW running WIN fullscreen is much faster that running as a Linux window. To me it seems just as fast as having booted WIN directly. To enter fullscreen mode press CTRL-ALT-RTN . To leave fullscreen mode press CTRL-ALT.

I actually installed VMware on a Windows machine. I got finally got it installed by using CLI. But it had some error which I didn't totally catch. It said to just hit return on all of the install questions but I think s/g went to the wrong dir and it won't let me uninstall it.

Other than deleting the VM & starting from the beginning, any ideas?
