Configuring sound card
 

I loaded Red Hat 7.1 the install recognized my card, but no sound. I did the config screen, but I can't hear the test wav. What do you guys think? Thanks for replies.

What kind of soundcard? You might need to get a new driver depending on what you have.

Also, you sure that the mixer isn't right the way down? They often default to a zero volume.

ahhh, memories... the first time i installed linux, i re-installed the sound driver 3 times before i discovered kmixer.

The card is the Sound Blaster Live! I thought tried Kmixer already. Will check again. I'm still using loser Windows for my internet so I'll have to reboot. good ole LILO. I'm only 4 weeks into Linux, some struggles, different mind-set. It's starting to come together. I did jump right in, going for LPI Certification, and taking up a Linux career. For now I'll probably be back w/ questions. Soon I hope to come back and start helping people. Thanks again!

are you using suse? the sound module installation isn't very good, and you need to edit /etc/modules.conf by hand. there's a few lines that say something like

alias char-module-14 off
alias sound-mixer off
alias sound-somethingelse off

they need to #'d out and the correct module name needs to be un-#'d

I have Red Hat 7.1 w/ Kernel 2.4. I d-loaded emu10k-2000726.tar but having a hard time. The make wasn't finding the right directory or something. I'll have to poke around with it a little more.

Had a similar problem... If you are using KDE, you may have to disable Sound Server starting on boot. That caused my drivers not to load because the service was already running and causing confilct. You can find the settings under Preferences/Sound/Sound Server in KDE.
