configuring net card on suse

at school i have some computers wich have windows 2000
and suse linux 10 on them.
problem is that internet does not work on suse linux 10 bcuz
its not configured.
what i did is posted an output of the
command ipconfig /all in windows.
the letters a,b,c,d
from fields

Physical Address
IP Address
Default Gateway
DHCP Server
DNS Servers
Primary WINS Server
Subnet Mask

are for my own privacy.the can be refferd to as some symbols
(altough they were supposed to be ips)...
ok
so how do i configure from console in suse
having this data?

i remember in mandrake and damnsmall i had netcardconfig.
i see here in suse that i dont have this command but this may
be caused by the fact that here i am a simple user and not root
as i was home when working with the two distros mentioned
above.

Well, your Win2000 config implies that DHCP is being used on your network in which case Suse should pick up a dhcp address. 'ifconfig' will tell you if the nic has picked up an address or not. If it has picked up the DHCP info the only thing I have found necessary with Suse sometimes is to add a default route to the default-gateway. It should happen automaticaly but sometimes it doesn't. 'route' will list available routes. If there is no 0.0.0.0 entry us 'route add default gateway <ip of default-gateway>.

If Suse is not getting a DHCP address but other workstations are OK then you may have issues with your nic card.

Again use 'ifconfig' if it shows the nic card as present it is a good indication that the driver is OK.

You could try manually configuring the nic, open Yast and go to network cards and configure the IP, mask, Default Gateway and DNS servers from there. Changes made in Yast are permanent.
