configuring apt unreachable source

I have installed debian on my machine and have been having real trouble updating with apt through the internet. I am able to connect through the internet when inside debian using firefox, however whenever I try to config the sources list to use ftp.debian.co.uk it gets host unreachable.

my ifconfig looks like this

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:133:28:65:7F
inet addr:192.168.1.3 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
EtherTalk Phase 2 addr:65280/250
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:990 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:1037 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0
RX bytes:665259 (649.6 KiB) TX bytes:193420 (188.8 KiB)

and my eth0 is config to obtain via DHCP, any reason why it wont connect through the terminal?

another small problem I have is that I have to installs of apache 2.0 The first was installed with apt-get by using a cd and it installed the apache daemon, I want to stop this.

I have also installed the xampp package which also installs apache, mysql, etc. I want to configure my machine so that I can uninstall the apache2 I first installed with apt-get and then leave the xampp installation on there and make sure that the processes are started on boot.

any help is appreciated.
