./configure: No such file or directory

I'm trying to install Acrobat Reader 7.0 from source. After extracting the files (I think) I type ./configure. Then I get an error that tells me bash: ./configure: No such file or directory. I understand this is a command but I seem to be following the instructions for compiling from source that is provided on this website.

I'v always had a terrible time with tar.

Thanks

configure is a script that comes with source tarballs ( it's not a command on your system, rather it is an executable script inside the source directory, which is why the ./ is in front of configure).

Note that some packages do not use configure, and ./configure, make, make install is not universal. look for a README or INSTALL file inside your directory for instructions on what to do.

So, if the instructions in the readme file say "run the install script to install" . I'm guessing I would
use "./INSTALL" since the file named INSTALL is just a long script. On the other hand I may be way off.

i think there might be script such as

install-sh

run that
INSTALL file generally is for instaructions for how to install
u should have aloook at that also

On the other hand, i may be way off, what's the meaning of the phrase "be way off"?

"be way off" could usually means very wrong or not even close to being right.
