./configure error (what does this mean?)

Hello,

I'm a MEPIS 3.3.1 user, trying to install a package (kthememanager), and I can't seem to get past this configure problem. It stops with an error saying:

checking for KDE... configure : error:
in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail.
So, check this please and use another prefix!

I don't know what this means. I untarred the folder into my home directory, and was trying to configure it using a shell session in the same folder. Do these files need to be somewhere else? I don't know anything about prefixes, or KDE headers.

I also DL'd an RPM package of this app, and tried to install it with Package Manager, but it errors out, saying I need to use Alien instead. Not sure what that is either.

I'm stumped.. I know there are answers to this somewhere, but after several days of searching, you know how you can work yourself into a state of uselessness? Well that's where I am at the moment.

Thanks for you time,

~Alchemist

You need to install KDE headers. To do so, install a package called kde-devel (using apt-get). This package will install all header files so that you can compile from source other programs that depend on KDE.
Also, if you want to install this program not from source, you have to download its deb package, and not the rpm package.
If you don't find it, you can always convert from rpm to deb using alien. To install alien, open a terminal and type (as root) :
Code:
apt-get install alien
Good luck.
