Hi,

I am trying to install chinese fonts on my system (macpup_foxy3). i downloaded scim-pinyin-0.5.91.tar.gz and now trying to install but i got this error:

i used the package installer to install the gcc-4.2.2-1 with dependencies checked but still i got this error.

1. someone pls come to my assistance and help me get this running.
2. is there any other way to install the chinese fonts and have them display in all applications?

What's in "config.log"? There is a good reason it tells you to look in there.

Where is gcc installed? If that directory is not in your $PATH, it needs to be added.

I used Macpup_foxy3's internal package installer to install it. i don't know where it installed it to. pls guide me. Thanks.

Here's something else i stumbled unto while playing around. i was looking for how to install Chinese fonts and have them display correctly, i decided to copy some unicode fonts from my windows vista font folder. i copied [1] simhei.ttf, [2] ukai_0.ttf (a.k.a. AR PL ZenKai Uni) [3] lingoes.ttf (fonts [2] and [3] i downloaded off the net) from windows, via USB to /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF in Macpup_foxy3 linux (maybe it's the same path for other linux distros) and VOILA! i all documents bearing chinese fonts displayed very well. i also open some .doc files and it displayed (although some weren't displaying, less than 10% missing fonts). in firefox, went to chinese websites and the fonts all displayed perfectly (before i couldn't show chinese fonts).

I'm sure this is not new but in case anybody has problem displaying asian fonts, this is very helpful. just try copying asian fonts from windows or just download them off the net (esp. true-type fonts - .ttf) into your linux font folder. close all folders and browser and reopen/restart.

Now my main problem: HOW TO INPUT CHINESE CHARACTERS? pls help.

Can you try running "locate gcc" in a terminal? Is there any output?

No idea about this, I'm afraid.

What did you select for "Country setup" when you installed Mac Puppy?

I just booted "Puppy Linux", and in "Puppy Setup" you can change the "Country Settings", which includes "Choose keyboard layout for your country". Have a look around in the menus and see if you can find something similar.

i chose english-us but i tried changing the keyboard layout and it doesn't work. someone suggested installing a chinese puppy. i'll keep this as the last option.

I saw three Chinese options during install, but they are not available once Puppy has started. You might try re-installing MacPup.

No idea, I'm afraid. You might want to try "mlocate" or "slocate", but I don't know unfortunately.

i later solved the problem on how to input chinese characters. But it's not wise to leave without telling how just in case another person runs into the same chinese IME problem. i found the answer here:
