Unhappy Confessions of a linux/ubuntu Noob

I started with ubuntu because my brother always used linux/ubuntu, and my bootleg copy of 7 crashed 2 years ago. For those 2 years I have been doing the basics online with XP on tired old laptop.

Said tired old laptop is having problems with wireless card and will lose all connectivity - probably sooner than later. Clearly, I need a contingency plan.

I have a rather large HP with 8 whatever ram. It has also had several upgrades because my bro gets bored at the same time that I have disposable income...so any way, don't make any assumptions about the hardware.

Alas, my brother has left the country and needs must we not have contact, especially online. What can I say except we don't miss our water 'til the well runs dry.

So here's the thing...I know what I want out of the software, settings and such, but I know nothing about command line stuff. So just because I feel retarded saying that, you can kinda understand how it happened.

My biggest issue right now is connecting the desktop to internet. I have wireless or LAN access.

Will some patient soul be so kind as to walk me through the process? I mean, I have a web presence to establish now that my brother is away and I no longer enjoy the anonymity of using his connections and webservers.

So have you tried using Network Manager on the panel (bottom right maybe) to see if your wireless router is picked up? If you can't find it, then these will help us the most (copy and paste them into a pastebin of some sort):

Code:
iwconfig
ifconfig -a
lspci -k

1st advice don't write something like that on public forums(like "im silly and have money" poster during trip on bad streets)
why you need command line? GUI stuff is easy recent Gnome/Unity shells have connection manager on right top corner(in windows case look at icons at bottom right corner).
LAN way: pulgin cable, click on connection manager fill all forms with provided by ISP values
WIFI way: same click on connection manager choose wireless network enter code and here you go.

hmm...okay then.

thanks for the reply, but I just solved the problem by getting another provider. trying to figure out how to hook up through wireless adapter seemed to confuse people.

So in my previous experience there was a way to access terminal and system and such with a drop down menu, now that isnt readily apparent to me ....is there accessories somewhere? cant find it.
