Computer fails to boot graphically any more

After I updated the system with suse on-line update I rebooted the computer and the screen when it usually starts x-session went black for a few seconds then it flashed between black and the details that appear when the system then it just shows a command line prompt. On one of the updates said that if I used lilo I should run sbin/lilo I use grub so I didn't. However when computer booted into command line I ran ncurses and changed the kernel to the one the computer was installed with. The only change this made was when I loaded up the screen stayed black.

Please help and if there is any information you want to know about my system just ask.

Thanks in advance

Try reinstalling the graphics card drivers (if you installed some of course)

I know on my Mandrake system, I have a graphical boot screen but I don't use GRUB. I use LILO with a graphical interface as opposed to text, which I thought was GRUB for a very long time. Try reinstalling lilo, the worst that will happen is your system becomes bootable

To answer jax i havn't installed any graphics drivers. And therefore don't know how i would go about re-installing them. Help would be appreciated. As for installing lilo grub seems to work fine the system boots to windows OK and seems to boot linux although kde or x-session which used to show don't any more. After the boot if I'm using the old kernel the screen goes totally blank. With the updated one I get a normal log-on screen : like one you get when you press Ctrl + Alt + F5.

Hope this shows you in more detail what is happening on my computer. Thanks to everyone for replying.

I'll give you the obvious news first. X is failing to start. This is why X looks like it is starting, you get a black screen, and then after a minute or so, it either just drops you back into a command prompt or simply hangs.

I believe what jax8 is referring to is that for some video card drivers (like nVIDIA), the driver modules have to be rebuilt any time a new kernel is booted for the first time.

Now the not so obvious. You might want to check (and post, if you think it would help) the contents of either:

/var/log/XFree86.0.log (if you are using the XFree86 libraries for X)

- or -

/var/log/Xorg.0.log (if you are using the XOrg libraries for X)

Towards the middle of the file you posted is this line...

(II) NVIDIA XFree86 Driver 1.0-4496 Wed Jul 16 19:06:03 PDT 2003
(II) NVIDIA Unified Driver for all NVIDIA GPUs

and then at the end of the file is this line...

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"

This tells me that you are using the custom nVIDIA drivers that are provided by nVIDIA. Since you didn't say what you updated on SuSE, I am guessing that perhaps a new kernel was installed. Every time you boot from a kernel for the first time, you have to rebuild this driver module.

So, for now, what you can do is this...

If you can log into the CLI, do so. I believe when SuSE installs, there is a "Failsafe" booting option under GRUB.

Go to /etc/X11/XF86Config and open it with the editor of your choice. Find the line in the "Graphics device section" that says:

Driver "nvidia"

and change it to

Driver "nv"

Save the file and try rebooting into your normal kernel. This should at least give you video capability. Once in X, you should download the latest nVIDIA drivers (6111, I believe) and build the new modules (you must be in runlevel 3 to do this). Once you've done that, re-edit the XF86Config file and change the value from "nv" back to "nvidia".

If you already have the nVIDIA module building app downloaded on your PC, boot into the CLI, re-build the modules and simply reboot -- no need to touch the XF86Config file.
