Computer Beeping Sounds

I do not know if this is related to linux or not, but on a regular basis my computer makes low volume beeping sounds that are like morse code. One batch sounds like dit dit dah dit dit dah and another dah dit dit dit dah. If it continues, it eventually goes to a lower volume beep and just stays on all the time with no breaks. It usually does this when I have opened several programs and am browsing and multi-tasking. I had Ubuntu crash on me once and threaten to crash other times. Never at the beginning of the boot up, the screen does not go black. I am concerned about the BIOS, the annoyance, and I also have one older 160 meg hard drive that I am unable to access. Any suggestions for checking this out?

Almost certainly hardware, I think I'd run memtest for a while and check the memory first.

After that, or during, you might apply slight pressure to the motherboard, flex any cables around, etc, to try to find anything loose or unplugged.

Pull memory, reseat it, then unplug all cables snd replug backin, will probably stop it.

Mobile / cell phones can interfere with soundcards.
"Bip-Bip-Bittety-Bip" sounds can be mobile / cell phone interference.
I get this all the time when I am on the move, using a 3G dognle for internet connectivity, and am listening to mp3s through my headphones.

I do not think it is a cause for concern.

Another thing to do is the docs on the motherboard. Motherboards sometimes emit error codes in the form of beeps.

You may have to open it up to get the make/model of the motherboard.

Thanks. This is a different sound than the cell phone interference.
