Compressing printing between Linux and Windoz Desktop Printers using a filter

I am able to print files from both the applications and standard text files to desktop printers on my LAN using lp -d<printer_name> <file_name>. One of the applications produces very wide [235 column] reports that I need to change the 'CPI' and 'LPI' to make them fit standard letter 8.5x11.0 paper. I would like to introduce the HP esc codes [ Lines/LPI/CPI per page= (dec) \027\038\108\048\079\027\038\108\054\068\027\038\107\050\083 ]to the beginning a the application file and then the reset HP esc code to the tail of the file using [ \027\069 ]in a filter.

I've looked at various locations on the Linux box(es)and found HP filter info but cannot figure out how to set the printcap 'if=' or the 'of=' properly or where to put the filter.

Any help with making the filter file or locating it would be much appreciated.

TIA

jeager
