Complete linux n00b - seeking help with speedtouch 330 modem and kernels
 

Hi all - wonder if any of the knowledable bods on this forum might be able to help me out, since my head is completely spinning.

I am a complete linux newbie, trying to get away from windows XP, and I have downloaded and installed the latest stable debian release (3.0r2) and managed to sucessfully run a "vanilla" install. I'm now trying to get my speedtouch 330 USB modem working.

I've searched the net a fair bit, and there seem to be a whole variety of options available. Apparently the latest "unstable" release of debian has inbuilt support for the modem, but I don't really fancy downloading another set of CD's when it's not a stable version. The most popular advice given seems to be to download and use the "speedbundle1.0" package, so I've managed to get that and the alcaudsl.sys file copied onto my linux drive. I can untar the file as instructed, but when I go to do the ./configure bit, I get a message saying "error: Could not find the source for your running kernel in /lib/modules/2.2.20/build"

Does this mean I need to get the source code for my kernel? I have tried to suss out how to get this source code, but I must admit I don't have a clue. I can't seem to find anywhere to download it, and a lot of stuff on the net seems to say something about upgrading the kernel to a 2.4 version. IS this why it won't work? I know that the kernel can somehow be modified, but I don't know how, or whether I should.

Anyone have any ideas that might help?

Does anyone know what the solution to this was please? I'm having similar problems, except I know that when I installed Debian from the Woody minimal install disks, I did take the option to install the 2.4 kernel. I'm getting the same error message when running the "make" command with Speedbundle1.0:
"Could not find source for your running kernel in /lib/modules/2.4.18-bf2.4/build"

The /lib/modules/2.14.18-bf.4/ directory exists, but there is no subdirectory called build.

Any pointers on what to do would be greatly appreciated -- right now I'm off to try work out if I can get the kernel source via apt

Quick update for anyone else finding this thread with the same probs...

The problem was that the Woody minimal install just gets you a kernel image and no source (unsurprising and sensible, since it doesn't actual build the kernel when installing). Following the Debian Sarge HOWTO for installing the Speedtouch drivers (http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/Spe...argehowto.html) I realised I needed a more up-to-date kernel in any case and so downloaded the source via apt-get kernel-source-2.4.24 and installed in from there. Anyone else needing to do this, the Linux kernel HOWTO (http://www.linuxdocs.org/HOWTOs/Kernel-HOWTO.html) is essential reading. After this that particular error message did not reappear, although I still have some issues with the modem.

What issues are you having?

Why don't you try http://sourceforge.net/projects/speedtouchconf/ or http://sourceforge.net/projects/speedtouch/

the later provides deb packages. I've not gotten the 1.3 version to work with my speedtouch usb (sting ray) on woody (1.2 worked).
It should work with 330 as well.

BTW, you should be using a 2.4 kernel, it has better support for usb. It's as easy as an apt-get install. Unless you have a lot of self compiled drivers.

I've actually posted a separate thread over in the Hardware section about the issues I'm having now. I am running a 2.4 kernel now and the USB support doesn't seem to be a problem -- but I'd prefer to use the kernel-space rather than user-space solution since it seems to be more stable in the long run (if I can get it working, that is!). That was meant for MrGeezer. Anyway, the user space solution don't seem unstable to me. BTW are you trying to install the drivers on woody or sarge?

I'm trying to get it all to play with Sarge, but I originally installed Woody and then upgraded.

oh. I started clean with sarge. I used the speedtouch package from debian, which is the userspace solution. Could get it to work with the kernel driver. Had to rmmod speedtch in the hotplug script in order for it to work; although the -k option of modem_run is supposed to allow that. Still working on it.

oh, i'm using the 2.6 kernel btw.

Just another note. I just did this yesterday so I can't vouch for the stablity on sarge. I was previously commenting on woody.
