It could also mean the OP is visiting LQ from work, or an internet cafe, etc.

Sorry for being so unclear!! What I meant to say is that the laptop with ubuntu has no access to the internet and of the several other machines in the house, only the ubuntu laptop has a floppy drive.! And the son she want's to have it is only ten and he has only ever used xp... kinda rules out the option of leaving ubuntu on!
Will look into flashing the bios thankyou. Thanks again for all replies and sorry for being so unclear!

You can also try using SmartBoot Manager or PLoP from floppy which will allow you to boot from CD.
