Compiz causes media players to crash

Every time I have Compiz activated and I try to watch a video full screen using VLC Player, or even Movie player, the player crashes. When I turn Compiz off, all is fine. How can I fix this?

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 dual boot on my iMac.

Are you actually switching compiz off or just changing display settings to "none"?
Can you play movies in windowed mode?

I just switch to none, and I am able to watch videos as long as I don't go full screen. That's when the video player crashes.

Hmmm ... nvidia graphics - and you are using the nvidia driver since compiz is working.

nvidia is a proprietary driver (check with System > Administration > Hardware Drivers)
you usually have to tweak the settings. But you may be using the nouveau driver.
