compiling tar.bz2... "./configure make make install" doesn't work

I extracted "all-20040809.tar.bz2" in "all-20040809". I went there to write "./configure"... and so on. But it just says:
No such file or directory
Thanks for any help

What are you trying to install and where did you get the instructions that tell you how to install it?

dodo1983 08-16-2004 03:53 PM

i am still a bloody newbie. I don't know. I just try it this way out...is it wrong?
...and: I didn't find any readme about this codecs which could tell me, how to compile and install it.

Please watch your language when posting on these forums:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/rules.php

I have no idea if it is right or wrong, instructions vary from package to package - thats why I asked you what you were compiling.

From you second statement it seems to be some kind of codecs. Which codecs are you compiling and where did you get them from?

dodo1983 08-16-2004 04:07 PM

(I don't know exactly which rules I do transgress. I hope it is a missunderstanding.)

Anyway: downloaded all-20040809.tar.bz2 from mplyerhp.hu. It is a codecs-package. Maybe I have to extract them "into" mplayer?

Thank you for your help.

The language I was referring to was the swearing, this is a multinational site and we have visitors of all ages visiting.

The mplayer codec installation instructions can be found here:

Was there any kind of a readme or install file in the unpacked files? I once downloaded something where you skipped the ./configure and went straight to make and then install. Or maybe after unpacking it you just need to copy it to the correct location.

Re the "swearing". There may be some confusion because that particular word (b****y) isn't considered offensive to many english speakers. In the USA it is generally thought rather mild. It would barely get a rise out of a little old lady sunday school teacher. I do know that in Britain it is considered very offensive, but then I've watched a lot of Brittish comedy on Public TV. ;)
