compiling source really confused

Ok so I've looked at the tutorials for compiling source to install programs but I still am not catching it.
I save my tar.bz2 and tar.gz zip to file:/home/rein/DLs
what do I do to open them and compile them from that location?
tar:/home/rein/DLs/logjam-4.4.0.tar.bz2/logjam-4.4.0
thats the location when I click on the tar files and open them all the way up
I really dont understand how you compile

[root@localhost rein]# $ tar xvf logjam-4.4.0.tar.bz2
bash: $: command not found
[root@localhost rein]# tar xvf logjam-4.4.0.tar.bz2
tar: logjam-4.4.0.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
[root@localhost rein]# tar xvf /rein/DLs/ logjam-4.4.0.tar.bz2
tar: /rein/DLs/: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
[root@localhost rein]#

did you try tar xvjf ?

-j, --bzip2
filter archive through bzip2, use to decompress .bz2 files

http://reviewed.homelinux.org/man/tar/

and if you're using the absolute path, no space b/t dir and filename - ie, use:

/rein/DLs/logjam-4.4.0.tar.bz2

if that's where the file is.

why are u logged in as root to untar? anyways, cd to where the files are. so u would:
cd /rein/DLs/
from there try ur
tar -xvf logjam*
u have to be in the dir or make sure u have typed it correctly.
