compiling programs
hey!
i have a very n00b question - what exactly happens when you compile a binary program on your distro of linux?? and why would you want to do that rather than just use a pre-compiled one? i compiled samba 3.0* yesterday and it took about an hour on my old machine -then didn't work anyway. i'm just curious :) -disorderly |
It gives you full control over how, what and where to install to. You can compile to suit your hardware and other needs as well for maximum performance, etc.
