Unhappy Compiling linux kernel (fedora 4)

hi,

Well my untimate goal is to get wirless suport on fedora 4 but it seems i have to learn how to compile a kernel to do that. I have the linux kernel source and have tried following two tutorials but seeing as my directory /usr/src/Linux doesn't exist only /usr/src/kernels and /usr/src/redhat (which despite having numerous dirs they are all empty).

/usr/src/kernels has two dirs (named) with two kernel versions. Just to say that since installing fedora 4 a couple of days ago i have installed a precompiled kernel, installed some developer version, and now the source version.

I'm a bit bewildered here can anyone point me in teh right direction? e.g. tutorials or explainations of where things should be installed etc. Whats teh different between double installing an rpm via the GUI and via rpm -Uhv filename.rpm?

Please help, I'd be lost!

I have no knownledge on Fedora at all since Redhat 9.0 but if it's like any other linux your kernel and source is in /usr/src directory. umm if you don't see directories named Linux and linux-2.6 or 2.4 then move over to the directory that says Linux or Linux-2.4 or 2.6 then do a make Xconfig (if you have video card support) or make config for commandline text (Note: make config is a very long process because you go through every piece of modifable information that is in it) after that do a make && make dep && make bzimage && make modules && make modules install ( i havn't did a kernel reconfiguration in a long time so make dep might be make clean lol but I really think it's make dep)

I'd suggest make menuconfig rather than make config.

/usr/src/linux should be a symlink to the kernel source. mine looks like this:

Code:
steve@DAW ~ $ ls -l /usr/src/
total 4
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root   22 Aug 16 01:15 linux -> linux-2.6.12-gentoo-r6
drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 1280 Jul 19 21:39 linux-2.6.11-gentoo-r3
drwxr-xr-x 18 root root 632 May 4 16:37 linux-2.6.11-gentoo-r6
drwxr-xr-x 18 root root 664 Jun 9 07:37 linux-2.6.11-gentoo-r9
drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 1280 Sep 28 18:33 linux-2.6.12-gentoo-r6
drwxr-xr-x 18 root root 632 Oct 21 17:12 linux-2.6.13-gentoo-r3
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 192 May 5 22:18 pc
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 168 May 5 22:18 redhat
steve@DAW ~ $
I don't use redhat or fedora but it looks like your sources are in /usr/src/kernels/linux-something

if you have istalled the kernel source package and you don't have the /usr/src/linux symlink you can make one like this:

Code:
# cd /usr/src
# ln -s /usr/src/kernels/linux-something linux
note: the "#" mean you do that one as root

make menuconfig is a ncurses based menu that you can just go in and change what you need to. this is what I always use to configure a kernel (unless ncurses is not installed)

make config will ask you hundreds of questions about your system that you probably know nothing about or might not apply to you at all.
