The steps should be something like the ones below. You may have multiple kernels or kernel sources, so you'll need to substitute the version number where I've typed version.
1. change to the directory cd /usr/src/linux-version
2. execute the make menuconfig command
3. Add/Remove kernel modules. The error may have said what you need to include.
4. Save the changes and exit
5. execute the following make && make modules && make modules_install
6. Copy your new kernel to /boot by executing cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage-version
7. Edit your bootloader to include an option to boot the new kernel.

I don't have knoppix installed, I do have the live CD, so I might not be much help. But could it be he/she just needs kernel source or headers required for compiling modules?.

If what you downloaded from nVidia was a script & modules, it could be that it failed because it couldn't find kernel source headers like "Junior Hacker" said.

i have teh NVIDIA drivers.. the installer does all teh compiling for you, all you need is the Kernel-source (or kernel-headers depending on distro) pakages installed.

open your distros pakage manager then search for kernel, install anything taht sounds remotly like those 2 pakages, that has the same version number asd the kerenel you can see,

if you post yoru distro i may be able to be more sepific.
