compiling kernel 2.6.12.5

i want to compile kernel 2.6.12.5 because my onboard sound is not working. nor is my soundcard(soundblaster32). i have downloaded kernel 2.6.12.5 and umcompressed it to my /home directory. i'm following the turorial to compile your own kernel in this website http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...icle&artid=170 and after issuing make xconfig, i cant find the " button/menu entry that reads load configuration from file" I dont want to mess up my system, i just want to be able to listen to some music. Should I load all modules? I have an ATI Radeon X600 video card and a P4 2.8 socket 775HT that I would like to tweak my kernel to take advantage of said components. Any advise will be appreciated

i'm not exactly sure what you mean but if you have a config just put it in the top directory of the kernel and name it .config then make xconfig will open with that config loaded

thanks for the reply foo_bar, here is what i did
"cp /boot/config-2.6.12-1.1376_smp ~/linux-2.6.12.5", and i issue the comand make xconfig, i get a GUI with options to start customizing my kernel. However, the tutorial says that I should find " button/menu entry that reads load configuration from file", but I dont see it. Is it ok to proceed with loading the configuration file?

hi there

after u load those settings then u can make changes to your configuration aand save this config file and compile ur kernel

as far as menu entry is concerned u wil find the "load config" option in any of the menus
