compililing the linux kernel

Hi everybody
I want to comile the linux kernel So i had downloaded the linux kernel i,e ManRiX and place it under the /usr/src and unzipped successfully. But when i want to make the configure and run the command make menuconfig it shows an error no such rule to target menuconfig. And there is no configure file in the unzipped directory.

So any body can help me that what is the problem and how can i make the configure file that is needed for the kernel compile. So anybody can help me.

The kernel source doesn't come with a configure script, just a makefile.

What is ManRIX? That isn't the kernel, the kernel comes in tarballs like linux-2.6.16.tar.bz2.
