Compile kernel source

Hello,

I just upgrade the kernel to kernel-2.4.20-28.8 and install the kernel source > reboot the server

I went to /usr/local/src but the kernel source does not shows up .. am i missing something ?

I have install :

kernel-BOOT-2.4.20-28.8.i386.rpm
kernel-utils-2.4-8.28.i386.rpm

rpm -qa | grep "kernel" return :

kernel-pcmcia-cs-3.1.31-9
kernel-utils-2.4-8.28
kernel-2.4.20-28.8
kernel-BOOT-2.4.20-28.8
kernel-2.4.18-14

Please kindly advise as I was trying to compile the kernel 2.4.24 and without the source , I think the compilation will not be a success. THanks !

You need to get the source. What you've got is a precompiled binary by the sound of it. Go to http://www.kernel.org and get the tar.bz2 package. It's not worth getting an rpm if you only want the source.

i am running 2.4.20-28.8 but was not able to get 2.4.20-28.8 source from kernel.org, which one should I choose ?

also, after download the source, when I run make oldconfig in the current source directory , would it auto generate my current old config for the .cfg file ? I am thinking of using my old config setting without recompiling the whole kernel ...

thanks ...

Generally kernel sources are located in /usr/src
