Compile Kernel Problem

Wow guys, sorry for another post. Its problem after problem so far with linux. I just installed kernal 2.4.21 and I am using an Ambit Cable Modem (External) via USB. It still doesnt pick up my modem even after installing the new kernal. Is there a newer kernal out there? I installed the kernal right cuz it took my through some kind of installation process. which by the way almost screwed up my linux os . anyways.. is there another way to get my internet connection (other than bying an eithernet card or anything like that). Thanks guys

I'm sorry for saying this but, ethernet cards only cost about $8 to $15. When you reinvent the wheel, nobody wins
