Compile GIT from source on cPanel server (packages problem)

I wish to install GIT on my cPanel/WHM server, but according to this discussion, installing it through yum breaks the server. So generally people advise to compile it from source.

Being a novice Linux user, I was hoping someone could explain a few things. As I understand, Git depends on certain perl packages which are cPanel-specific. Installing it with a package-manager breaks those.

I have a dedicated production machine with root access. I wish to use git with one (power) user (which is still me), so I do not need it installed for all users.

How do I compile it from source without messing with cPanel's packages?
Does limiting it to one user alone make any difference?

I am really not (yet) familiar how package managers work, so I would appreciate links to "XYZ for dummies" to make sure I at least know what I am doing.

I am using CentOS 5.8.

Thank you a million!

After reading through the INSTALL and checking the server for dependencies (zlib, curl, openssl, etc.) I figured git has everything needed to compile. Which basically means that not other stuff needed to be installed?

Anyways, I did ./configure, make, make install and everything went through OK and git works as it should.

I still don't quite understand which packages, how and why would it break, so if anyone can enlighten me... please do!

I need to find a drawing of this stuff somewhere...
