I wish to install GIT on my cPanel/WHM server, but according to this discussion
, installing it through yum breaks the server. So generally people advise to compile it from source.
Being a novice Linux user, I was hoping someone could explain a few things. As I understand, Git depends on certain perl packages which are cPanel-specific. Installing it with a package-manager breaks those.
I have a dedicated production machine with root access. I wish to use git with one (power) user (which is still me), so I do not need it installed for all users.
How do I compile it from source without messing with cPanel's packages?
Does limiting it to one user alone make any difference?
I am really not (yet) familiar how package managers work, so I would appreciate links to "XYZ for dummies" to make sure I at least know what I am doing.
I am using CentOS 5.8.
Thank you a million!
