Comp. freezes with DVD's
 

HELP!... I'm using Fedora Core 4 on a Toshiba Satellite 1905-s277, whenever I insert a DVD, the computer completely freezes up. CD's will work fine. This never happened on Windows. Please Help!!

I'm using a fc4 on my workstation (p4 2.8). Kernel 2.6.12 and everything up to date. Does not matter which dvd I insert. If there are an avi file on it the desktop just freeze. No keyboard and no mouse. Had not this problem in fc3 and I do not have it in XP.
Any idea what to do?

To start with is it data or movie DVD?

I would drop out of X completely, check you running processors to get rid of any automounter crap and then put the disk in.

I would imagine something is just getting confused, happens with fc ;)

The Avi files are burned as a data DVD. I stoppped automount, autofs and logged out from x (booted in runlevel 3). I inserted the DVD and did a manual mount by
>mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrecorder and it just freeze, i.e the same result as before

I have a fully updated FC4 too and the same happens with me =(
before I updated it never happened...
I insert the DVD and the system freezes completly and I have to manualy restart it. Even if I try leaving the dvd in the drive and then booting up it wont boot it will stop show soem differente stuff and then freeze

Seems like this is a bug with the latest Kernels

There is a known bug in recent kernels (since kernel
2.6.11-1.13.1369_FC4) that locks up many systems when you insert a DVD.
See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla...cgi?id=162347. The
solution will be to either revert to kernel 2.6.11-1.13.1369_FC4 or wait
until a kernel is released as an update that fixes this problem.

If you have not removed the original kernel you should be able to select
it on your boot menu. Otherwise you would have to reinstall. What I did
was install the most recent kernel from Fedora testing and it seems to
work. My DVDs play. Go to
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...esting/4/i386/
and download kernel-2.6.12-1.1394_FC4.i686.rpm,
kernel-devel-2.6.12-1.1394_FC4.i686.rpm, and
kernel-doc-2.6.12-1.1394_FC4.noarch.rpm. Drag them from your desktop
into your home folder. Do "su", password, and then "rpm -ivh *.rpm". You
can remove the other kernels if you wish by following

It seems to work fine for me with kernel 2.6.12-1.1387_FC4 and 2.6.12-1.1390_FC4.

The kernel released yesterday (2.6.12-1.1398_FC4) resolves this problem. Just do a "yum update" as root to get it.
